Gus, the beloved canine companion to Ed Ray, president of Oregon State University, was a cream-colored standard poodle who held up his end of the human-animal bond by providing unconditional companionship and love. He was the First Dog of OSU and would calmly but happily greet visitors to the Ray home. He was smart and well-behaved and everyone who met him wanted to give him hugs. He lived a wonderful life and will be missed by all who knew him.
A donation was made in Gus's memory and the memorial was created on January 25, 2018.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Gus, but I know that a dog could not have chosen a luckier home. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

President Ray, although I was not involved in Gus' care, I remember him from a reception you gave at your home for new faculty in 2007 and I was very moved by your account during the renaming ceremony of the Carson College of Vet Med. I often tell owners that their pets are lucky to have them, but I think that we as pet owners are even more lucky to have the privilege to provide for them!

I met Gus on several occasions while working as a veterinarian assistant and he was truly one of the most intelligent dogs I’ve ever met. He understood the intentions and feelings of the people around him and was a wonderful patient. I know it was difficult to say goodbye but no one could have loved him more than Ed Ray. Best wishes XX

President Ray - the story of Gus you shared with all of us at the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine on the day of the big announcement was very moving and reminds me of why I'm in vet school. You exemplify what the human-animal bond is all about and that is very meaningful as a future vet. Sending you positivity and light during this time of grief.

Dr. Ray, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It can be so very difficult to let go, and I admire your strength for doing just that. You may have lost Gus from the physical world but his soul and love will be with you forever. Christiane
